Sunday was the McHenry County Start! Heart Walk.
People gather donations, walk around the track for
8 laps, which is approxmately 2 miles.
It was nationally sponsored by Subway and two
other corporations. Locally sponsored by Centegra.
There was also a Healthy Living tent by Meijer
who provided power bars, pedometers and the water.
It was really nice weather and a good turnout.
I think quite a bit of money was raised.
I wanted to help with the walk. To do something that was
literally not in the city but pretty much in my 'back yard.'
So I helped with registration. Taking the names, # of walkers
and donation amounts down.
The American Heart Association asked my dad to do
a small speech on being a stroke survivor. So they called
did an interview and then wrote up a script. He remembed
it and ad libbed of course.
He got a cap and shirt for being survivors (all survivors recieved one).
He did really great.
He felt so proud of himself. He got all emotional though!
The crowd got a laugh and were inspired.
It went over really well.
So he did his speech and he used part of his monologue when he did
his magic act.
It was great to see him thinking in that magic mode!
I recorded the speech and posted up on soundclick and took two photos
of dad. One of him speaking and one of him giving me that funny
look cuz I took a photo of him.
Grumpee man.

I just got our copies of Stroke Connection Magazine March/April 2007 that is now available.
This magazine has approx. 200,000 subscribed reader across the nation.
The other day, before we got our two copies, we had heard from someone unexpected who get this magazine and now lives in the Bay area.
She is the grand daughter of the family who owned the farm my dad lived and worked on a few years after he came to America.
She sent a message to my parent's myspace page with the subject:
Hi Uncle Louie, I hope you remember me
that was awesome.
Anyway...
It has an article feature with my family but also a side feature about me and my music.

( image of article )
The entire magazine isn't available for download yet.
You can download just the article here.
Or
order your own copies for a $1.00 here
Anything else I missed you can read here.
Other than that, I can't believe the weather is going to be really spring!
Tonight I have a genealogy meeting in Algonquin. This weekend I'm busy with a Business Expo,
planning to seeing my friend do an instore magic performance for a DVD release, and hang out
with my neighbor for his birthday gathering.
Nothing like a good time...i can't remember how that Poison song goes.
darn it. ohwell.
More babel soon.

You can download the full report here or an edited version of the feature here.
Remember when I vaguely mentioned about doing a photo shoot back in September?
Plus, I was nominated and awarded a Heart & Stroke Heroes Award by the American Heart Association?
( Well... )
Appearantly, I am the first artist to outfit my CDs with information, plus inserts from the AHA and
donate a portion of each sale to them. Besides that, the only one that does all of that...
That's pretty cool...
I never expect I'd get this kind of recognition for my advocacy work and that people would be inspired by the
way my mom and I care for my dad. I just wanted to be able to get the word out. I was naive and stupid when
my father's stroke happened. I wasn't prepared for anything. Life is still teaching me lessons.
When I first started working on a way to outfit my CDs in 2000, I just wanted to make contacts with certain people in
the organization and to make sure I wasn't stepping on any toes. In 2005, I started the "Take Heart <3frncs Cause"
to give me a way to do what I do as a musician and advocate, while forwarding on the missions of the AHA.
Four years ago I was figuring out a way where I could plan a Stroke Awareness Event...and a year ago the
Stroke Awareness Event because a reality as I was able to get help from the AHA itself.
It was a success... and the rest is history I guess.
I won't be able to put on a Chinese New Year Partry - Stoke Awareness event this year. It ended up getting
shelved back in November. The original venue has ultimately went through re-organization and a lot has changed.
I wanted a bigger venue so we wouldn't have the issue with room...The one i was hoping for didn't pan out and
my second option just never really got off the ground.
I'm looking into other options but I'm still in process of getting something in July together. Right now February
is a huge month with the Go Red for Women Movement.
February 2nd is National Wear Red Day and February is American Heart Month.
I'll be spending a lot of time at the "Take Heart <3frncs Cause" myspace page. So check it out when you get the
chance: www.myspace.com/144057190
Anyway, I hope you enjoyed the story and that you get the opportunity to download either one of the
Annual Reports. Its a nice accomplishment for what I do...at I least I like to think so.

Today we went out early to do some grocery shopping and to pick up a couple of copies of the Northwest Herald.
The LIFESTYLES section has a featured article about my family.
Its a great article written by Geneva White.
There was soo much information she took in I was a little concerned with how she was going to be able to write
enough to get people's attention. She did a fabulous job.
I've heard from several people already via email and an old high school/neighbor friend who now lives in Alabama.
I can't exactly put into words how I feel as in a month from today Dad will be 8 years post-stroke.
When I got the paper in hand, I started crying because I hate the stroke. I reallyreally do. I wish it on no one,
not even my worst enemy (if I have any). Because as my mom always say "Stroke Sucks!
Its a busy day today and I think instead of writing a whole lot, after I get certain things done today, tonight
I'll make a voice post.
Check out the article online for all my friends here to can not pick up an actual copy...and for all you who can
pay the 50 cents because you'll see two other photos and then pass it along to a friend to help spread the
word on stroke...cuz
IT CAN SAVE YOUR LIFE OR SOMEONE YOU LOVE.
Thank you Geneva.

Last Whensday was the American Heart & Stroke Heroes Event.
I received acknowledgement & recognition for being an advocate for the past three years.
It was a fine day (kinda humid) and the ceremony went by fast.
I played a few songs, my parents did a trick, they showed a video.
I received a very nice award.
Its sitting on my desk.
Mary received her award for being our N&B support coordinator.
She deserves it greatly...
Here are some photos from the event
Also I am a featured artist @ awarestore.com for another week.

You can make your contribution to the American Heart & Stroke Association
easily by purchasing any of my CDs...
You can read more at www.mai-ling.net/takeheart.html
I also found a new review of 'chronology.' ... it got a 9 out of 10
I'll write and post links another day.
